Derives from a cross between an early generation from "the Sleepy Family" called 'Wilpena' and 'Cherokee Purple' by Patrina Nuske Small in 2008 and was called "Plentiful". 'Maralinga' was then selected and named by Patrina. Maralinga is a place in southern Australia where Great Britain tested nuclear weapons in 1950.
