Dwarf Tomato Project (D. T. P.) is a tomato breeding project that has been going on for more than 10 years, with growers participating all around the world. The goal is to create a number of low-maintenance tomato varieties with delicious flavor, variations of size, colors, and use. Today the project has introduced about 130 different awesome varieties!
Characteristics the varieties have in common are that the plant height varies from 60-140cm depending on the variety. They have rugose (crinkly) foliage and grow with very thick stems. They need no pruning of the suckers. They need no support height-wise but require staking or support on the width. The branches get heavy when the plant sets fruit and will fall over without staking. They all work well to grow in larger pots or such, wherever the space is limited. In general, the plant gets smaller and produces a bit less grown in a pot than grown in a field. According to fruits size, color, shape, or taste, you can find almost everything you are looking for in the D. T. P. There are varieties from the sweetest cherry to the juiciest beefsteak. Normal-sized varieties perfect for canning or fresh eating or paste-types great for cooking or sauces. What you can't find are longkeeper varieties. Color-vise there is anything from white-yellow-green to orange-red-brown-black to striped and multi-colored. What you can't find is antho-colored varieties though. We have to keep calm and wait!

Russian Swirl, 'Dwarf Russian Swirl Tomato' is a dwarf variety growing up to 100cm in height. Heavy yielder of mid-sized, oblate beefsteak tomatoes around 100-350grams each. Sarandipity, 'Sarandipity Dwarf Tomato Project' is a dwarf variety growing up to 70-90cm in height. Produces round, mid-sized, tomatoes around 50-100grams each. Chocolate-brown fruits with vertical green stripes. Sweet and mild flavor. Rugose, dark green foliage, regular leaf. Derives from a cross between 'Black Zebra' and a pink selection from "the Cheeky Family" by Ray South. Was then called "Streaky." Scarlet Heart, 'Dwarf Scarlet Heart Tomato' is a dwarf variety growing up to 90cm in height. Produces heart-shaped, mid-sized tomatoes around 80-150grams each. Scarlet-red fruits with a full, excellent flavor. Rugose, dark green foliage, regular leaf. Determinate dwarf. Derives from "the Nosey Family", a cross between 'Roza Vetrov' and 'Anna Banana Russian' by Patrina Nuske Small in 2007. Linda Black made the final selection and named the variety. Sean’s Yellow Dwarf, 'Sean's Yellow Dwarf Tomato' is a dwarf variety growing up to 100cm in height. Produces oblate, mid-sized tomatoes around 90-200grams each. Golden-yellow fruits with a fresh, delicious flavor. Rugose, dark green foliage, regular leaf. Determinate dwarf tree-type. Selected from "the Witty family", a cross between 'Budai Torpe' and 'Cherokee Green'. 'Sean's Yellow Dwarf' was named by Lee Newman. Sleeping Lady, 'Sleeping Lady Tomato' is a dwarf variety growing up to 90cm in height. Produces oblate, mid-sized tomatoes around 80-170grams each. Mahogany-brown-red fruits with a pleasant "dark" tomato flavor. Rugose, dark green foliage, potato leaf. Determinate dwarf. Selected from "the Grumpy family", a cross between 'Budai Torpe' and 'Black from Tula', by Patrina Nuske Small in 2006. Was later selected and named by Sherry Shiesl in Alaska. Snakebite, 'Dwarf Snakebite Tomato' is a dwarf variety growing up to 90-120cm in height. Produces oblate, mid-sized to large beefsteak tomatoes around 100-400grams each. Yukon Quest, 'Yukon Quest Tomato' is a dwarf variety growing up to 90cm in height. Produces slightly flattened, mid-sized tomatoes around 80-170grams each. Smooth, pink fruits with a pleasant, well-balanced sweet flavor. Rugose, dark green foliage, regular leaf. Determinate dwarf tree-type. Selected from "the Grumpy family", a cross between 'Budai Torpe' and 'Black from Tula' by Patrina Nuske Small in 2006, Australia. Mochas Cherry, ‘Dwarf Mocha's Cherry Tomato’, is a compact dwarf variety growing up to 45-50cm in average in height. Produces large, round cherry tomatoes, up to 20 grams each. Beautiful fruits with the anthocyanin gene, giving them an antho-purple color. Some fruits turn almost black when it is exposed to the sun. As fully ripe the fruits turn dark red with a purple neck. Pleasant, mild tomato flavor with some hint of tartness. Rugose, dark green, regular leaves. Derives from “The Anthy Family”, by Craig LeHoullier. “The Anthy Family” is a cross between ‘'Dwarf Saucy Mary' and an unstabilized anthocyanin pink, indeterminate cherry tomato from Tom Wagner. Mignonne, ‘Dwarf Mignonne’, is a dwarf variety around 90-120cm high. Heavy yielder of oval to pear-shaped large cherry tomatoes. Very pretty, golden-yellow fruits with purple-black antho neck. Mild and juicy tomato flavor. Rugose, regular leaves. Cross between 'Dwarf Saucy Mary' and an unstable antho cherry from Marcia Dillon/Tom Wagner by Craig LeHoullier. Deaton's Dwarf – NOT is a dwarf variety growing up to 90cm in average in height. ‘Deaton’s Dwarf’ is a heavy yielder of chocolate-brown fruits, but some of our plants in 2022 produced green fruits instead. ‘Deaton's Dwarf – NOT’ produces round, mid-sized fruits around 80-200 grams each, the same shape and size as its sibling. The fruits ripen from green to a more amber-green as fully ripe. Delicious sweet and slightly tart tomato flavor. Rugose, dark green, regular leaves. Eagle Smiley ‘Dwarf Eagle Smiley Tomato’, is a dwarf variety growing up to 100-150cm in height. Heavy yielder of bright yellow cherry tomatoes, around 10-15grams each. Outstanding, strong, sugary, and sweet tomato flavor. Extremely productive. Rugose, dark green, regular leaves. Great Scott NOT is a dwarf variety growing up to around 120-150cm in height. This is a quite new variety, and as far as I can tell it should produce heart-shaped fruits. Chocolate Heartthrob, ‘Dwarf Chocolate Heartthrob, is a dwarf variety growing up to 90cm in average in height. Produces heart-shaped, smooth tomatoes, around 100-250 grams each. Beautiful, mahogany-brown fruits with metallic-green stripes. Excellent, well-balanced, classic tomato flavor. Rugose, dark green, regular leaves. The second release from “the Hearty Family”. Elsie’s Fancy, ‘Dwarf Elsie's Fancy Tomato’, is a dwarf variety growing up to 90cm on average in height. Produces oblate, slightly ribbed, smooth tomatoes, around 100-300grams each. Bright yellow fruits with a well-balanced, but intense tomato flavor. Rugose potato leaves. Beautiful variegated foliage, with streaks in crème-white and pink. ‘Elsie’s Fancy’ is one of the three first varieties with variegated foliage developed by “The Dwarf Tomato Project”. Pico’s Pride, ‘Dwarf Pico's Pride Tomato’, is a dwarf variety growing up to 90cm in average in height. Produces round to slightly oblate, smooth tomatoes, around 50-100grams each.
