Caganer, ‘tomàquet de penjar Caganer’, is a Spanish “hanging tomato” – longkeeper tomato from Catalonia, Spain. “Penjar” is “to hang” in Catalan. This variety has quite small fruits and got its name from the smallest room in the house, “el caganer”, which literally means "the pooper". The fruits are about 4cm in diameter, around 30-40grams each. Yellow-red-orange fruits with greener necks. Keeps very well after harvest. Cal Camalligat, ‘tomàquet de penjar de Cal Camalligat’, is a Spanish “hanging tomato” – longkeeper tomato from Catalonia, Spain. “Penjar” is “to hang” in Catalan. This variety is named after a farmhouse in Aguilar de Segarra and was reported by Rosa Vilaró. Produces quite small, orange fruits with a pointed tip, around 40grams each. Castellar, ‘tomàquet de penjar de Castellar’, is a Spanish “hanging tomato” – longkeeper tomato from Catalonia, Spain. “Penjar” is “to hang” in Catalan. It’s named after the municipality of Castellar del Vallès and was reported by Lluís Serra. Produces round, smooth, pale-pink fruits around 50grams each. Each cluster contains around 7 tomatoes. d’Arbúcies, ‘de tomàquet de penjar d’Arbúcies’, is a Spanish “hanging tomato” – longkeeper tomato from Catalonia, Spain. “Penjar” is “to hang” in Catalan. Its named after the village of Arbúcies in Girona and was reported by Pere Pasqual. Produces orange-red fruits with a pointed end, around 50grams each. Firm fruits with thick flesh and little juice. Originates in the municipality of Montornès del Vallès and was preserved by Maria Seguí. Produces elongated, orange fruits around 20-30grams each. Keeps very well after harvest, until spring. Originates in the municipality of La Fatarella, preserved by Joan Pellissa. Has originally been farmed on dry land, drought and heat tolerant. Produces round, small, firm, and quite dry fruits. Zyska is a productive dwarf, or bush, variety growing to around 60-90cm in height. It produces bright red paste-type tomatoes of around 60-90grams each. Dikaya Roza produces mid-sized to large beefsteak tomatoes of around 200-700grams each. The fruits in the picture are around 250grams each. Flattened and slightly ribbed fruits with plump, slightly ribbed shoulders. Pretty bright pink color and pink flesh. Dense and firm with an excellent, well-balanced tomato flavor. George's Greek produces mid-sized beefsteak tomatoes of around 200-500grams each. Slightly flattened and ribbed fruits in a shiny red color. Meaty and juicy flesh with a traditional, sweet tomato flavor. George’s Greek is front left in the picture. The other varieties in the picture are ‘Big Italian Plum’, ‘Arkashin’, and Jantar (yellow). George (of Greek descent), in Vancouver, British Columbia, grew the variety for several years. Seeds were later obtained by his daughter Tina Exarchoulis. Beauté Blanche produces mid-sized beefsteak tomatoes of around 100-400grams each. Beautiful, cream white fruits with white flesh. Slightly flattened fruits with some ribbing. Fleshy and juicy with a very sweet tomato flavor. Beauté Blance at the bottom of picture 2, 142 grams. The other varieties in the picture are American Ribbed Red on the top left, 225 grams.
